The race is on for the midterm elections across the country, as November approaches. Most people have long made up their minds for whom they will vote, but as always, there are still some waiting to be wowed by a candidate to make up their mind. As Republicans face a battle to retain their majority, there are multiple Congressional seats on which they are watching, and none might be bigger than three races in South Texas.

House Speaker Mike Johnson was at a rally in McAllen last week, telling a crowd that South Texas will "decide the majority in Congress" come November. While that might seem very broad, considering how many races there are nationally, there is a semblance of truth to the statement.

In the 15th District, Republican Congresswoman Monica De La Cruz is battling to hold off Democrat Bobby Pulido. The 34th District features Democrat incumbent Congressman Vicente Gonzalez facing off with Republican challenger Eric Flores. Those two races appear to be the most competitive, with Republican Tano Tijerina facing a very steep climb in trying to unseat 28th District Democrat Congressman Henry Cuellar.

GOP strategist Matt Mackowiak says Johnson is onto something, as these seats will be a big gear in the machine.

"The margin in the House is razor thin, there are probably 30 to 40 House seats that are truly competitive...South Texas is consequential," he says.

The very thin majority for Republicans is the concern. History is already working against them, as only once in 100 years has the majority party retained power in the midterms. Every seat is going to count to keep President Trump's agenda rolling, as the Democrats sole political platform is impeaching President Trump. Should Democrats gain power, they will not use it for anything remotely helpful. Just impeachment.

Which makes voting all the more important, but specifically, driving the vote of the right demographics. For Republicans, what has helped drive the Trump train has been the South Texas Hispanic vote. People in the Rio Grande Valley have been vocal about their desire for shutting down the border, and President Trump has delivered. But the American memory is that of a goldfish, and if the media propaganda tells people to care about affordability, they will.

"Large border towns like Laredo, McAllen, Brownsville, Edinburg...that Hispanic vote is even more critical," says Mackowiak. "If the GOP does not do as well with the Hispanic vote as they did two, four or even six years ago, it is going to make those really competitive seats even harder."

While affordability is an issue for voters, it is something President Trump is slowly fixing. It was not caused by him. It was caused by four years of President Biden killing off American energy, chickens, and the climate change agenda. It takes time to fix, and any logical voter knew it was going to take time to rectify.

But the average voter does not necessarily vote with logic, they vote with passion. It all depends how fired up they are over affordability, and if they have the patience to ride it out. There are good things on the horizon. But all of these question marks make South Texas that much more crucial.

"When you have a three or four seat majority in the House, you have a really, really narrow margin of error," Mackowiak says.

South Texas could provide a lot of answers, and potentially, decide the direction of the country for the next two years. It is a simple choice. You either want chaotic impeachment trials, with no semblance of governance, or you want President Trump to have a chance to fix the country.
