Texas Federal Judge Blocks Abortion Pill Authorization

A federal judge is halting FDA approval of the abortion pill mifepristone. On Friday, Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk issued a stay that will stop the prescription and distribution of the pill. A lawsuit from an anti-abortion group was filed against the FDA's approval of mifepristone, arguing the nearly five-year approval process for the drug was rushed. The Justice Department called Kacsmaryk's decision "unprecedented" after it was already ruled the lawsuit was based on false claims. The government has seven days to appeal to the conservative 5th Circuit Court and seek emergency relief before the ruling goes into effect.
