Austin Clears Out Second Homeless Encampment

A second homeless encampment in Austin is now shut down. City officials removed dozens of people on Wednesday from the camp under a freeway overpass at Ben White Boulevard and Menchaca Road. They were taken to a city-owned hotel, and thereby spared from possibly being cited under the city's ordinance against public camping. The city bought the 75-room Rodeway Inn in South Austin in 2019 and converted it to the Southbridge homeless shelter.
