Abbott May Cancel State GOP Convention In Houston

Governor Greg Abbott and state Republican leaders are potentially at odds over the party's planned convention in Houston this month. Coronavirus cases are surging in Houston, and Abbott is encouraging Texans to stay home and wear masks. The Republican State Convention is planned for July 16th-18th as an in-person event at the George R. Brown Convention Center. Abbott has the authority to shut down the event, which would be unpopular with grassroots conservatives. The state party's executive committee plans to vote on whether to make the convention a virtual event.
