Iconic Central Park Mall Sears Store to Close

It is truly the end of an era in San Antonio retail as Sears Holdings, Inc. says it is closing the Sears store which anchored the former Central Park Mall for five decades, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

The closing of the Sears in what is now called the Park North Shopping Center in the 600 block of Northwest Loop 410 was confirmed by Business Insider.

The Sears, which was shiny new when Central Park Mall opened in the early 1960s, outlived the mall itself by a decade.  When Central Park Mall closed, the Sears outlet refused to close with it, and has been a free standing store on the east edge of the new mall.

Business Insider says the San Antonio Sears is the only Texas Sears among 24 store closings announced this week. The stores are expected to begin the process of closing this summer.

This follows Sears closing more than 100 Sears and K-Mart stores just last month.
