Brooks City Base, which was created after the Air Force closed Brooks Air Force Base in 2011, is undergoing a name change, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.
The Brooks City Base name was chosen to designate the residential, commercial and industrial developlment which has grown up on the site, while paying homage to the site's nearly 100 year history as a military aviation center.
But the word 'Base' in the name is confusing. A recent stUdy shows 52% of Bexar County residents think Brooks is still a military installation, and is not generally open to the public.
In fact, Brooks is a rapidly growing 1300 acre site which includes a growing number of apartments, as well as industrial facilities, restaurants, shops, a hospital, a brand new Embassy Suites Hotel which just opened last week, and the City's emergency operations center.
The historic Hangar 9, which was built 100 years ago this year and remains one of the few remaining World War One airplane hangars anywhere in the world, was recently renovated and is now avaialble as an event venue, as well as for tours.
So the facility will now be simply called 'Brooks' and the imaging and social media presence is changing to 'Live Brooks.'
"The Board approved the name change to help clear up any misconceptions in the wider community," Brooks said in a statement. "Digital and social assets have been migrated ot 'Live Brooks' and signage will soon reflect the change."
