Driver Kills Self as Police Approach

A routine minor accident on the southeast side turned deadly in a blink of an eye this morning, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

Police were called to the intersection of I-37 and Fair Avenue about 2:30AM for a report of a minor accident.  A man had smashed his pickup truck into the retaining wall under the I-37 bridge.

But as the officer approached the car, he noticed the driver had a gun.

Before the officer could react, the driver got out of the car, put the gun to his head, and pulled the trigger.

The man fell to the ground and was dead by the time an ambulance arrived.

The officer was not hurt.

Officials are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
