Austin Shooting Suspect Had ICE Hold, Was on Juvenile Probation

An Austin shooting spree involving multiple teenagers is now drawing attention to both violent juvenile crime and immigration enforcement after prosecutors confirmed one suspect has an ICE hold.

Police say 17-year-old Cristian Fajardo Mondragon, who investigators say is not a U.S. citizen, was already on juvenile probation when he and two other teens allegedly carried out 12 shootings across the city over the weekend, injuring four people.

Authorities say the suspects also stole several vehicles, damaged homes and Austin fire stations, and hit multiple fire trucks during the two-day rampage.

One victim remains hospitalized in critical condition. Mondragon is now facing six felony charges and is being held without bond while the two younger suspects remain in juvenile custody.

The case is likely to fuel more debate over juvenile repeat offenders, border security, and public safety as Texas law enforcement agencies continue the investigation.
