Sudan Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok has been detained in an apparent military coup, according to U.S. officials.
Hamdok had been planning a transition to civilian rule next month, as part of a pro-democracy movement sparked by mass street protests in the African nation.
Instead, military leaders arrested Hamdok and several other government officials, declaring a state of emergency.
U.S. officials say they're "deeply alarmed at reports of a military takeover", calling it "utterly unacceptable".
