Compton is launching the largest universal basic income program in the nation.
About eight hundred low income residents will receive cash on a monthly basis. The so-called, "Compton Pledge" program will be evaluated by an independent research team every six months.
2.5 million dollars in private donations will initially fund the program. All donations will go to the Fund for Guaranteed Income, which is led by Nika Soon-Shiong, the daughter of LA Times owner Patrick Soon-Shiong.
Several cities across the nation are considering launching their own programs. In California, Stockton began a program last year. Los Angeles and Long Beach are considering their own.
