2 Texans Aboard Hantavirus Cruise Confirmed To Be Houston Residents

Two Texans who were aboard the MV Hondius, which endured a hantavirus outbreak while at sea, are now back in the state and being monitored.

According to reports, the CDC and the DSHS say the Texans are currently symptom-free and departed the ship before the outbreak was known. They are currently being monitored.

According to reporting from our TV Partner Channel 2, they are residents of the Houston Area.

Hantavirus is primarily transmitted through the urine, droppings, or saliva of infected rodents, but some strains—including the strain that appeared to break out onboard the Hondius—have a limited ability to transmit person-to-person.

Thankfully, transmission usually requires prolonged close contact, like you might see on a small cruise ship, and there are no known cases of asymptomatic transmission.
