Back during the 2019 debacle when Democrats tried impeaching President Trump again, they threw all forms of story at the wall to see what would stick. They went with Stormi Daniels, 2016 election interference, you name it. Seven years later, we know nothing truly came of it. Trump was not removed from office, and he has since been elected President once again.
But even after all the time has passed, new information is coming to light. New key documents surrounding the impeachment saga have been unearthed by National Intelligence Director Tulsi Gabbard, which show the Democrats had a plan to frame President Trump over a phone call he had with Ukraine. The documents have previously unreleased transcripts with the Inspector General and show a coordinated effort to attack Trump over the Ukraine call.
Author Hans Mahncke says essentially, they were hoping to use Ukraine as a hook to get people on board with impeaching Trump.
"That he was interfering in the 2020 election by having Joe Biden investigated for Ukraine corruption...they used the fact he discussed it with the Ukrainian president as this sort of hook," he says.
For starters, there was plenty of cause for an investigation. President Biden was accused of making deals with the country to fire a prosecutor, not to mention his son Hunter Biden's ties with Burisma. But even beyond the logic of investigating such a thing, this is basic diplomatic relations.
Contacting a country about a former vice president committing fraud essentially to move the political needle is not shocking. Democrats would cheer it if Kamala Harris would have done it. But because it is Trump, they use it as a theatrical jumping off point.
"These are normal diplomatic relations...when the predecessor vice president has a deal with a country, to leverage taxpayer funds to get a prosecutor fired, that is a foreign policy matter," says Mahncke. "So, for a sitting President to inquire into that, there is nothing wrong with that."
It is also borderline comical for the Democrats to cry about Trump investigating Biden, when they threw every single possible investigation at him the last four years. Producing nothing but useless, baseless cases that everyone has since forgotten.
Of course, people will want Democrats prosecuted for these revelations. They basically, for lack of a better word, were committing a coup. It does not meet the traditional definition, but it was a similar idea. If you expect anything to come of it though, think again.
"The problem is it has been seven years...the time limit for bringing federal charges against anyone is five years," Mahncke says.
He adds that statute of limitations is part of why these documents were kept under wraps for so long.
