One of the biggest spenders in Texas politics recently has been Super PACs that are connected to and backed by artificial intelligence companies and their founders. They’ve been spending heavily on Republican candidates.
According to reporting from the Texas Tribune, one such PAC, known as “American Mission,” spent over $300,000 in support of Republican congressional candidate Chris Gober. He won his primary and is now headed for the general election in November.
So why are AI PACs spending so much on Republicans? According to political strategist Bill Miller, the answer is simple: They’re the majority. “It makes sense,” he explained. “They’re putting their money where they think the decision makers will live and be elected, so it’s a smart move.”
That being said, Republicans aren’t the only ones benefiting from this massive AI push. As even the Texas Tribune points out, another major AI PAC known as “Leading The Future” has raised around $50 million and has pledged to spend that on both Democrats and Republicans.
Miller says that move makes sense. “Money doesn’t belong to one party or the other, and you always want to hedge your bet,” he explained. “If the locals are Democrat-controlled, you want to be playing at that level too.”
He believes the strategy is to build a bipartisan pro-AI coalition within the Texas congressional delegation and throughout all levels of Texas politics that can then be used to push the AI agenda forward.
