Texas Families Can Start Applying For School Choice This Week

Wednesday is the first day that Texas families can sign up for the state-sponsored school voucher program.

"Texas has come out of the gate with the largest (ESA) educational savings account program in the country, so it's a pretty robust offering to be coming out of the gate in year one with" said Adam Mangana, president and CEO of Optima Ed.

The application period is set to run until March 17th.

"Where to apply is at the website educationfreedom.texas.gov" Mangana told KTRH, "And there will be a slight preference towards families of lower incomes, but it is universal and it's on a first-come, first-serve basis."

The voucher program will be capped at 90,000 students statewide.

"And then families will be notified of their funding status in early April. That's when you will either be approved or wait-listed. It will be the envy of many of the other states interested in universal ESA's" noted Mangana.
