Unrest continues in sanctuary cities and states that continue to harbor illegal aliens. Debates rage on about how to solve the issue.
Some are suggesting federal legislation targeting sanctuary cities, stiffer immigration enforcement, or even the Insurrection Act. Meanwhile, a far simpler solution has also been proposed: just give them what they want.
That’s not to say reopen the border like President Biden did, but rather allow the criminal illegal aliens in these sanctuary jurisdictions to have free rein—and make those jurisdictions bear the full cost and burden for the immigration crisis they seem to support.
Townhall.com columnist Scott Morefield explained the idea as the Trump administration simply saying: “You can have it. You do what you want to do if this means so much to you. But we’re not gonna fund the welfare or the healthcare. You’re gonna have to fund that yourself.”
He says if you use the illegal-alien problem like the political cudgel that it is, you might finally force these radical-left politicians into compliance with the law. “I think we’d see a lot of people really wanting to work with ICE, whereas they weren’t before,” he said. “Because not working with us is what’s creating this craziness.”
Morefield did also admit that there are a number of major problems with this plan. Primarily, there’s the issue of good Americans in these sanctuary cities who don’t want to be forced to suffer under illegal-alien domination, as well as the issue of birthright citizenship.
He says for those reasons, this could never be a functional long-term solution to the immigration problem—but it could be an effective negotiation tool in short-term increments.
