Providence Mayor Brett Smiley has announced that a person of interest in the Brown University shooting that killed two people is in custody.
That person has not yet been identified.
Two people were killed and nine others were wounded in the attack on Saturday.
"The call came in at 4:05 [Eastern Standard Time] to Brown University with the report of an active shooter" the mayor said, "I can confirm that two individuals have died, and there are another eight in critical status, though stable."
"Those are the only casualties that we know at this time, but it's important to remember and I have to remind people that these numbers may change."
"Additionally, we do not have a shooter in custody at this time. There is a shelter-in-place in effect for the greater Brown University area," the mayor added.
The Governor of Rhode Island, Dan McKee, calls the events "unthinkable," adding that he's mobilized all personnel, "whether it's the state police, or other agencies, but our office has been in touch with the White House, so we're bringing all resources to the table, and our hearts go out to anyone who has been impacted by this in any way.”
The person of interest was detained after officials put out a video last night which showed a man dressed in all black leaving the building after the attack.
