In an era of news impacted by mainstream media bias, parody social media accounts taken as truth, and youtubers pushing conspiracy theories, it is hard to tell what is real and what is not anymore. Some polls have even shown people get most of their news from TikTok, which is another conversation altogether. But it has become sadly difficult to see what is real or what is fake news.
The term, popularized by President Trump, has become a battle cry for Republicans, as the liberal legacy media continues pushing the same propaganda. But the White House is now taking steps against it. They have launched a new website, called "Media Offenders of the Week," which targets the fake news and biased mainstream media.
That puts agencies like CBS, the Boston Globe, and various others in the spotlight potentially for being exposed for what they truly are, which is propagandized nonsense that pushes a liberal agenda. Curtis Houck of NewsBusters says this idea is funny, harmless, and a great way to point out the insanity going on within the media.
"It is not a threat to their lives to point out when a reporter, or news outlet, is not doing their job and putting out biased stories," he says.
But leave it to the Democrats to take this and try to look for some way to be the victim. They will claim it is violent or somehow unconstitutional. In reality, they are terrified of being exposed as fraudulent and incompetent.
This idea too is being launched at a perfect time. The news cycle has been heating up, and it will only fuel the fire and capture attention.
"It is smart from a strategy standpoint because you give it a few weeks, with the news cycle at a fever pitch...people will be clamoring to find out who is listed at the end of a week, and the White House can drive engagement with that," says Houck.
As mentioned, you can expect the Left to get up in arms about the entire idea, because they just like being angry and miserable over nothing. But if Democrats do not go the pearl clutching route, they will go another.
"More obscure liberal blogs or obscure liberal journalists...they will definitely take this as a sort of 'badge of honor,' and try to run with it," Houck says.
He adds some will use the idea, and their appearance on the site, to try and drive donations from their radical base.
But in the meantime, the Trump Administration is taking all the steps it can to expose the fake news media, and it cannot come at a more perfect time.
