Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has officially opened an investigation into the City of Dallas. He believes their "Borders Sanctuary City Policies" could be in violation of state law.
He announced via press release that he has issued a formal request for records from the City of Dallas. He alleges that the Dallas Police Department has refused to comply with both state and federal immigration law.
The investigation follows comments from the interim chief of the Dallas Police Department, Michael Igo, who stated that, "The Dallas Police Department is not assisting any federal agency in detaining people who are either documented or undocumented in the City of Dallas."
According to the Attorney General, this raises concerns that the department and the city may be violating Texas laws that prevent sanctuary cities. He said, "The law is not optional. Local governments do not have the authority to disregard state and federal immigration laws."
He went on to say that his office will take all necessary legal actions to ensure that the state law is being followed.
