President Donald Trump’s 25% tariff increase on all steel and aluminum imports officially takes effect today, reinforcing his commitment to bolstering U.S. manufacturing.

In the lead-up to the tariff deadline, Trump considered doubling the duty on Canadian steel and aluminum to 50% but backed down after Ontario Premier Doug Ford agreed to delay a 25% surcharge on electricity exports to U.S. states

Canada, the largest foreign supplier of steel and aluminum to the U.S., is among the countries most affected by the tariffs. China, the second-largest aluminum supplier, also faces heavy tariffs, including a new 20% duty that was put in place last month

Canada has responded to Trump's tariff's with more of their own. According to Canadian Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc, Canada will be hitting multiple different U.S. products with tariffs, including American steel and aluminum, as well as sports equipment and some cast iron products.
