Teenager Gets Probation In Shooting Death of Friend

A 19-year-old is receiving a version of probation in connection with the shooting death of his friend.

Cayman Wilson was 17 when he and Marissa Dikeman were at her parents' home in the Crosby area, and as she was removed Christmas decorations, he was handling a shotgun that fired and killed Marissa, an investigation showed.

Wilson and another teenager were there to help take down the ornaments.

Wilson pleaded guilty to manslaughter charges.

He's now received a sentence of 5 years deferred adjudication from Judge Ana Hernandez.

Deferred adjudication is a form of probation usually connected to a plea bargain, in which the person pleads guilty in exchange for county supervision and must complete all court requirements -- if the requirements are met for five years, in this case Wilson will not have a manslaughter conviction on his official police record.

Wilson is now prohibited from owning or handling a firearm, must attend an education program and must pay $14,000 in restitution, according to the court.
