A new report has revealed that hundreds of thousands of Texas taxpayer dollars have been spent on mainstream media outlets like the Houston Chronicle, The Texas Tribune, and more. This raises the question of whether these outlets can remain objective.

Michael Quinn Sullivan with the Texas Scorecard says, at the very least, this doesn't look right. He said, "I think it's unfortunate that individuals who want to position themselves as being 'independent' when they're reporting the news are, nonetheless, putting their hand out and taking cash from those they're reporting on."

He went on to say that this gives the appearance of impropriety, and these outlets should ask themselves why they thought it was important to take this cash from the state.

Sullivan went on to point out that taxpayers should also be asking why Texas was ever spending their money like this in the first place. He pointed out that Politico received more than $253,000, and taxpayers should be asking why.

The office of Texas State Comptroller Glenn Hegar was reached out to by both phone and email about this story, but at the time of publishing, had not responded to a request for comment.
