A new border deal could be coming as soon as next month from U.S. senators.
Axios is reporting that a bipartisan group of senators has been having secret talks on getting such a deal done in the early stages of 2025. After all, the border and immigration, which go hand-in-hand, are President-elect Trump's top priorities for his second term in the White House.
A bipartisan border bill from earlier this year passed in the House but failed in a 43-50 procedural vote in the Senate. Now, top Senate Republicans say they want to move quickly to get a border package through using the budget reconciliation process for Trump within the first handful of days.
According to Axios, Senators Mark Kelly of Arizona and Gary Peters of Michigan are two Democrats who have been involved in the serious discussion on a new border deal.
"If there's willingness to work in a bipartisan way to do some stuff, not only on border security, but on immigration reform, I think it would be great," Sen. Kelly said.
During a press briefing this week among GOP lawmakers, Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) said Trump got a mandate from the American people to implement his agenda and now it's time for Congress to act accordingly for him, especially when it comes to the border.
"They want a secure border," Scott said about Americans. "They are fed up with drugs, they are fed up with criminals and they are fed up with terrorists coming across the border."
Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) uttered similar words, saying the country needs control of the border again with Trump at the helm.
"We are going to deliver real border security right up front," he said. "Our reconciliation proposal keeps the promise made for Americans."
Trump’s border czar Tom Homan estimates that Trump's deportation plan could cost upward of $86 billion. He wants to see more congressional funding and 100,000 beds for migrants.
