Texas BOE Approves of Bible Curriculum to be Taught in Public Schools

The Texas Board of Education has approved Bible lessons to be a teaching option for public schools in a final vote made Friday.

Bluebonnet Learning incorporates lessons from the Bible into reading and language arts textbooks in Texas K-5 public school classrooms. The vote was 8 to 7.

Board members heard two days of public testimony on the matter earlier this week. A preliminary vote by the board was then made on Tuesday to move forward with the Bluebonnet Learning curriculum.

This curriculum would not be mandatory but school districts who choose to adopt it would receive an incentive of $60 per student. There are 2.3 million public school students in kindergarten through fifth grade in Texas.
