Randy Beamer is the host of “On the Record,” airing Thursdays at 7:00 pm on KLRN-TV (Channel 9) in San Antonio. He also shoots and produces other projects for the PBS station, including a documentary on San Antonio artist Jesse Trevino.
A National Merit Scholar at Drake University, he also attended the USC Film School before finally deciding on Journalism. He started full-time in TV news as a photographer while still in college.
Over more than 40 years in news, Beamer has won an Edward R. Murrow Award and nine Emmy awards, along with others from organizations including the Associated Press and the Society of Professional Journalists.
He was WOAI-TV’s (News 4 San Antonio) weeknight anchor for more than 25 years, but also shot, reported, and edited his own stories as often as possible.
He’s worked on all kinds of stories from the Civil Wars in Central America in the 1980s to the Iraq War, from Hurricanes Katrina and Harvey to the tornado that tore the roof off his next door neighbor’s house.
Beamer’s reported and produced shows on national political conventions, the homeless problem, high-profile murder trials and scandals, mass shootings, executions, as well as San Antonio and Texas History, and the Spurs winning five NBA Championships.
His biggest passion is covering positive stories on all kinds of people, most of them you’ve never heard of. And he’s always more comfortable behind the camera than in front of it.
He also worked in Denver and Iowa, but San Antonio is definitely home.
Beamer is most proud of his four awesome children and young grandson.
And he’d rather you just call him ‘Beamer.’
