1 President Trump Threatens To Send Military To Baltimore
President Donald Trump threatened over the weekend to send military forces to Baltimore to "quickly clean up" crime, escalating his push to deploy National Guard troops to cities across the country. In a Truth Social post, Trump said if Maryland Governor Wes Moore needs help "like Gavin Newscum did in L.A.," he would send in troops, using a derogatory nickname for California's governor and referencing his recent deployment to Los Angeles. Trump's comments represent a significant departure from typical presidential use of the National Guard, which is usually reserved for natural disasters and civil unrest, not routine crime fighting. The president has already deployed thousands of National Guard troops and Marines to Los Angeles in June amid immigration protests, and brought about 2,000 armed National Guard troops to Washington D.C. this month as part of his stated crime-fighting efforts, despite violent crime decreasing 26-percent in the capital.
2 False Active Shooter Reports At University Of South Carolina And A Second At Villanova Yesterday
Villanova University was targeted in a second false active shooter report within four days yesterday. The swatting call came in around 11 am, directed at Austin Hall, a student dormitory. Police cleared the campus before determining it was a hoax by 11:39 am. This followed Thursday's false report at the law school that caused "panic and terror" during orientation. Both incidents are being investigated by the Delaware County District Attorney's office and the FBI. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro emphasized that swatting is illegal and directed state police to find those responsible. The University of South Carolina also issued a shelter-in-place order yesterday evening after receiving an unconfirmed report of an active shooter near the Thomas Cooper Library on the main campus in Columbia. Officials said there was no evidence of a shooter and no reports of shots fired. The alert was sent "out of an abundance of caution" at 6:45 pm, ordering students to evacuate, seek shelter, and barricade if necessary. Police searched the library building floor by floor as a precaution. No injuries were reported. The school has approximately 38,000 students.
