1 More Senior House Democrats Call For Biden To Withdraw From Presidential Race

The calls from Democrats for President Joe Biden to withdraw from the race for president picked up over the weekend. At least four senior House Democrats have now told House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries that they’re calling for Biden to step down. Reps. Jerry Nadler, Mark Takano, Joe Morelle, and Adam Smith informed Jeffries on a private call yesterday of their feelings on the Biden campaign. Alan Clendenin, a member of the Democratic National Committee, also called yesterday for Biden to “step aside and allow Vice President Kamala Harris to carry forward his agenda as our Democratic nominee.” Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff of California appeared on NBC News’ “Meet The Press” yesterday, and said that Vice President Kamala Harris could win “overwhelmingly” against Donald Trump, but it’s up to Biden to decide if he’s dropping out. Schiff said he was worried about Biden’s standing in the election, saying “he should be mopping the floor with Trump,” and also said that Friday’s interview with ABC News’ George Stephanopolous “didn’t put concerns to rest.”

2 Hurricane Beryl

Hurricane Beryl made landfall this morning just east of Matagorda, Texas. The storm was packing maximum sustained winds of 80 mph. The eye is expected to track just to the west of Houston and southeast of College Station as it moves north. Some areas could receive 5 to 10 inches of rain. Tornadoes are also a risk. Now that Beryl is moving inland, it should quickly weaken, with the system becoming a tropical storm in the next few hours and a tropical depression in a little over 24 hours.

3 Crew Of NASA's Mars Simulation Emerge After A Year

Over 12 months after the four volunteer crew members entered a simulated Mars environment, they came back out on Saturday. The crew entered the habitat on June 25, 2023, and then spent 378 days living and working inside a 1,700-square-foot space to simulate a trip to Mars. The experiment was designed to test how things might work for a settlement on the red planet, and science officer Anca Selariu had a good answer to the question of why we want to go to Mars. “Why go to Mars? Because it’s possible.”
