1 Louisville Police Chief Resigns After Mishandling Sexual Harassment Claims

Jacquelyn Gwinn-Villaroel was suspended earlier this month by Louisville, Kentucky Mayor Craig Greenberg over her alleged mishandling of a sexual harassment claim against an officer. Last week, two female officers filed lawsuits claiming they were sexually harassed by fellow officers in recent years. Yesterday, Mayor Greenberg announced in his weekly press briefing that Gwinn-Villaroel has resigned her position. That makes her the third chief o the Louisville Metro Police Department to resign or be fired in the last four years. Leadership in the department has been in turmoil since officers with the department fatally shot Breonna Taylor during a drug raid in 2020. Paul Humphrey, who took over as acting chief after Gwinn-Villaroel’s suspension on June 12th, has been named as interim chief. Humphrey is the fourth interim chief of the department since 2020. Two female officers with the department filed lawsuits last week alleging they were sexually harassed by fellow officers. Greenberg said there won’t be an active search for a new full-time chief for now. Gwinn-Villaroel has been the full-time chief of the Louisville PD for a year.

2 Primaries: Bowman Out, Boebert Still In

Voters in New York delivered a surprising result in yesterday’s 16th District congressional Democratic primary. Westchester County Executive George Latimer was called the winner of the primary after building a lead of over 10-percent with roughly 70-percent of the vote counted. Latimer defeated Rep. Jamaal Bowman, the progressive representative who was a member of “The Squad” in the House. Latimer, meanwhile, is a moderate with backing from pro-Israel groups. Talking to supporters after the race was called for Latimer last night, Bowman said “our opponents – not opponent – may have won this round, at this time, in this place, but this will be a battle for our humanity and justice for the rest of our lives.” With the primary win, Latimer will most likely be the new representative for the heavily Democratic district; Joe Biden beat Donald Trump by 45-percent in the district in 2020. In his speech to supporters after his win was called, Latimer said that both parties have to find a way to work together, ending by saying it doesn’t matter “whether you’re a Mets fan or a Yankee fan.”

3 Chinese Lunar Probe Successfully Returns First-Ever Samples From Dark Side Of Moon

China’s moon probe has completed its sample-return mission. The Chang’e probe returned to Earth in the Inner Mongolian region in northern China yesterday afternoon with a payload of rock and soil samples from the far side of the moon. It’s the first time samples have been returned from the “dark side of the moon,” giving China bragging rights in the area of space exploration. China has said it plans to share the samples with international scientists…but didn’t say from which countries.
