A Hurricane Watch and Storm Surge Watch are now in effect for the Texas coast from the mouth of the Rio Grande northward to Sargent as the state of Texas braces for Beryl.

The tropical storm's winds diminished to 65 mph after the storm thrashed Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula. The storm is expected to intensify into a hurricane again before making landfall along the Texas Gulf Coast early Monday.

The latest projections show landfall is now possible near the Corpus Christi and Rock Port areas. After making landfall, the storm is expected to weaken as it tracks north between San Antonio and Houston.

Gov. Greg Abbott is directing 39 agencies with the Texas Emergency Management Council to prepare for Hurricane Beryl. The State Emergency Operations Center will be staffed 24-7 as the storm approaches. The 39 agencies include the Texas Division of Emergency Management, the state police, the National Guard, TxDOT, Parks and Wildlife, the Salvation Army, and the Red Cross.

1. Hurricane-force winds, dangerous storm surge, and heavy rainfall are beginning to occur across the Yucatan Peninsula within the hurricane warning area. Residents there should shelter in place through the passage of these life-threatening conditions today.

2. There is an increasing risk of strong winds, storm surge, and heavy rainfall in portions of northeastern Mexico and southern Texas late this weekend. Interests in these areas should closely monitor the progress of Beryl and updates to the forecast. Hurricane and Tropical Storm Watches will likely be issued later today.

3. Rip currents could cause life-threatening beach conditions beginning late today and continuing through the weekend across much of the Gulf coast.
