1 Six Senators Call For Trump To "Immediately Reverse Course" On Russian Diesel Plan

President Trump announced a surprise deal to buy large amounts of diesel fuel from Russia, a sharp reversal of years of U.S. efforts to pressure Moscow over its war in Ukraine. Trump said on social media that after speaking with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Russia would immediately supply more than 300-thousand tons of diesel, followed by 500-thousand tons in November and a million tons soon after. The move comes just weeks before the midterm elections, as high fuel prices put pressure on Trump and Republicans. The announcement was striking because Trump had just signed a sweeping law last month aimed at cracking down on Russia’s energy income. Six senators from both parties are asking President Trump to drop his plan to buy diesel from Russia, saying it would help fund Russia’s war against Ukraine and go against U.S. law. Republicans Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, Thom Tillis and John Curtis joined Democrats Jeanne Shaheen and Richard Blumenthal in calling for the change yesterday.

2 At Least Five  Dead From Hurricane Isaias

At least five people died after Hurricane Isaias hit the Florida Panhandle near Destin on Friday, bringing strong winds, heavy rain, and widespread power outages. The storm came ashore around 8:30 p.m. Central Time as a Category 2 hurricane with winds of 105 miles per hour. Officials confirmed two deaths in Florida and two in Alabama. More than 438,000 customers remained without electricity on Saturday, most of them in Florida. Even after the storm weakened, its remaining rain and wind threatened the Southeast. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis warned that rivers could keep rising, bringing more flooding in the days after the storm.

3 Pope Leo XIV To Undergo Lung Surgery After Lesion Found

Pope Leo XIV will undergo surgery this week after doctors found a small lesion in his lung, the Vatican said. The 71-year-old pope, the first American to hold the role, announced the news himself during his Sunday blessing, saying the lesion was caught early and that doctors advised removing it. Recovery is expected to take about a week, and he is set to be treated at a hospital in Rome. Leo has no previously known health problems and stays active, playing tennis and swimming. He said he still plans to take a major trip to South America in November, though it is unclear if the surgery will affect those plans.
