1 US Military Recovers Unidentified Remains In Jordan; Another Service Member Dies In Iraq
A U.S. service member was killed on Saturday in northern Iraq during a controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian attack drone, U.S. Central Command announced yesterday. A second service member was wounded and is being treated for a minor injury. It came a day after the Pentagon announced that two U.S. service members were killed and one went missing in an Iranian ballistic missile and drone attack on U.S. and partner forces in Jordan on July 17th. Yesterday, the military also announced that personnel searching the site of Friday's attack in Jordan recovered unidentified human remains. Officials said an examination is underway to determine whether they belong to the missing service member. The war, which began February 28th, has now wounded more than 400 U.S. troops and killed 17.
2 Tropical Storm Watch Issued For Gulf Coast From Alabama To Florida
A tropical depression is churning in warm Gulf of Mexico waters south of the Florida Panhandle and is expected to strengthen into a named storm. The National Hurricane Center issued a tropical storm watch yesterday for parts of the Florida Panhandle from the Ochlockonee River to the Alabama border. The system was centered about 155 miles south of Panama City, moving north-northwest at just 2 mph with maximum sustained winds near 30 mph. Forecasters expect it to become a as early as today. Rainfall totals of 2 to 4 inches are forecast, with locally higher amounts near 8 inches, and 1 to 3 feet of storm surge is possible along parts of the Florida coast. Forecasters also say that people in Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas should monitor the system.
3 Taylor Farms Removes Iceberg Lettuce Linked To Cyclosporiasis Outbreak
Taylor Farms says it is voluntarily removing iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico after it was linked to one of the largest stomach illness outbreaks in the U.S. in recent years. The company said federal investigators pointed to one independent farm making up less than 1-percent of the country's iceberg supply, but it pulled all lettuce from that region indefinitely; the company said none of its branded salads or kits are involved. The CDC identified lettuce supplied to select Taco Bell restaurants in five states as a source, and Taco Bell has removed the lettuce as a precaution. The outbreak has spread to 34 states, sickening at least 1,644 people by CDC counts, though states report far higher numbers. No deaths have been reported from the outbreak. Some stores that have pulled lettuce products due to the recall are: Walmart, Aldi, Costco, Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, and Target.
