Will Stricter Gun Laws Solve Our Crime Issues?

Given the recent high-profile shootings we've seen, namely the assassination of Charlie Kirk and yesterday's attack on a Dallas ICE facility, it shouldn't be a surprise that the left is once again calling for stricter gun laws.

The question is, would that actually solve the issue of political violence or violent crime in the United States? Dr. Greg Fremin, a retired HPD captain, doesn't think so. He said, "That's just like someone saying that automobiles are the reason we have such a high fatality rate; it's absurd. It's the people behind the wheel that are doing it, and that's what needs to be addressed in gun violence. It's not weaponry."

The fact of the matter is, the guns are really just a scapegoat for the real issues causing the violent crime we've seen across the U.S. Dr. Fremin explained that in many cases, the root issue is the national mental health crisis that we haven't addressed. He said, "Many of these people, if not all of them, are suffering from a deep mental or psychotic issue, and that's causing them to do what they're doing. This elephant in the room needs to be addressed."

He went on to say that the issue is being made even worse by the light-on-crime judges across the country who are allowing criminals with lengthy rap sheets to roam free. He said, "In far-left-leaning states, they believe all offenders are redeemable. There are some people that never need to see the light of day again, but they're releasing these people back out onto the streets."

In short, Fremin believes that the real key to reducing violent crime across the U.S. is to simply take mental health issues seriously, treat them rather than encourage them, and then, when someone does break the law, make sure they're punished for it.
