After a Jewish community center in San Antonio was forced to close for the day last week due to threats of violence, the Jewish community in Texas is growing concerned about a rise in antisemitism across the Lone Star State.

This appears to be part of a larger trend seen across the U.S. since the start of the latest conflict in the Middle East, particularly on college campuses.

Rozalie Jerome, with the Holocaust Remembrance Association, called out this pattern, saying, “We’re seeing a terrifying wave of antisemitism, not only online but on campuses. Synagogues are ramping up security or even closing temporarily.”

She said this can be addressed, but it will require better education about the history of the Jewish people and antisemitism, which is why the Holocaust Remembrance Association exists. She added, “We created the Garden of Hope in Kingwood, Texas, to teach future generations the lessons of the Holocaust and the power of being a rescuer.”

Jerome also applauded Governor Greg Abbott for his efforts to combat antisemitism throughout Texas, saying, “I love our governor. He does so much to ensure our universities understand the difference between free speech and speech that crosses the line. I know Texas is on top of things.”
