Why Are Houston Police Encountering More Suspects In Ballistic Gear

Last week, Houston police had to shoot a man who was wearing ballistic gear and then shot officers. It seems like we're seeing more of these encounters on the streets. But are we?

"I think this was just a one off event" said Major Earl Dean with the Harris County Sheriff's Department, "We have not noticed a spike in these types of incidents. This would be deeply concerning, especially from an officer's safety standpoint."

But, Houston police are still dealing with a lot of crime.

"It's getting close to summer and we're doing several initiatives to combat and curtail said crimes" Dean told KTRH, "And we just want the citizens to be aware that we are out there in force, and just to be aware of your surroundings."

It's worth noting that violent crime here in Houston has gone up every month, so far this year.
