San Antonio's former poet laureate is suing the city for firing him. Nephtali De Leon held the position for four-months last year. In August 2023, De Leon posted a poem on his Facebook page that contained words that some readers described as racist. Soon afterwards, De Leon says city officials told him he could resign or be terminated. De Leon is suing San Antonio for breach of contract and defamation. His attorney claims the firing violated De Leon's First Amendment rights.
