Rising University of Texas junior Hubert Kos of Hungary earned the gold medal in the 200-meter backstroke final on Thursday evening at the Paris Olympic Games inside Paris La Defense Arena. In addition, former Longhorn Carson Foster qualified for the final of the 200-meter individual medley.
Texas Men’s Swimming has now earned a total of seven medals (one gold, three silver, three bronze) through the first six days of competition at the Paris Games. Former Longhorn Caspar Corbeau earned bronze in the 200 breast on Wednesday. The trio of rising senior Luke Hobson and former Longhorns Carson Foster and Drew Kibler won silver in the 4x200 free relay on Tuesday. Hobson also claimed bronze in the 200 free on Monday, and Foster won bronze in the 400 IM on Sunday.
During Thursday night’s 200-meter backstroke final, Kos posted a time of 1:54.26 to finish in first place. Apostolos Christou of Greece claimed silver with a mark of 1:54.82, while Switzerland’s Roman Mityukov captured bronze with a time of 1:54.85.
In Thursday evening’s 200-meter individual medley semifinals, Foster recorded the second-fastest time (1:56.37) to advance to Friday night’s final. France’s Leon Marchand, who trains under Texas head coach Bob Bowman, tallied the fastest time of the semifinals with a mark of 1:56.31.
During Thursday morning’s prelims, Foster advanced to the 200-meter IM semifinals as he posted the 10th-fastest time of the heats with a mark of 1:58.63.
