Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery is planning to add more than 40,000 new spaces before the end of the year. The new spaces are part of a five-year plan to develop another 23-acres for burials. Cemetery director Jerry Lefler says the new burial and cremation spaces will be available by this fall, and should extend the life of the cemetery by about 20 years. Some 180-thousand veterans and their relatives are buried or memorialized at the cemetery. Thousands of people visited during the Memorial Day weekend.
