Adam Sandler will reprise his iconic Happy Gilmore role in an upcoming film for Netflix, the streaming service officially announced during its Upfront presentation and on its social media accounts Wednesday (May 15) amid months of speculation.

"Happy Gilmore is back! Adam Sandler will reprise his iconic role in a brand new movie coming to Netflix," Netflix wrote.

Sandler is the only officially confirmed actor set to return at the time of the initial Happy Gilmore announcement as no other longline or other attachments have been revealed as of Wednesday. Actor Christopher McDonald, who played Gilmore's golf nemesis Shooter McGavin, initially teased a potential reprise of the 1996 film in March.

Sandler has long had a partnership with Netflix, which includes producing and starring in the exclusive releases of The Ridiculous Six, Murder Mystery and You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah. Happy Gilmore is among the actor and comedian's most popular films, serving as half of the namesake of his production company, Happy Madison, along with Billy Madison, which was released one year prior in 1995.

Gilmore, a failed hockey player, joins the Pro Golf Tour after discovering his incredible driving ability in order to raise funds for his grandmother to avoid eviction. The titular character is trained by former golf pro Chubbs Peterson, played the late Carl Weathers and has romance with Pro Golf Tour public relations director Virginia Venit, played by actress Julie Bowen, who later starred as Claire Dunphy in the ABC series Modern Family.
