Mission San Jose in San Antonio is one of 19 new listings on the National Underground Railroad Network. National Park Service Director Chuck Sams made the announcement on Monday. The mission joins a church in Hidalgo County and a cemetery in Brackettville as the only three known Texas stops on the Underground Railroad. In 1833, five runaway slaves from Louisiana made it to San Antonio, which was still in Mexico at the time. The Mexican Army protected the runaways from their pursuers.
