U.S. Senator John Cornyn is reportedly thinking of making his move to become the Senate's Republican leader. On Wednesday, Minority Leader Mitch McConnell announced his plans to retire from the position after 17-years. Cornyn hasn't given a formal announcement that he plans to run for the post, but he's often dropped hints of his interest in the job. McConnell will finish out his term as minority leader this year.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton doesn't think much Cornyn possibly moving into the role. Paxton posted on X, "It will be difficult for @JohnCornyn to be an effective leader since he is anti-Trump, anti-gun, and will be focused on his highly competitive primary campaign in 2026. Republicans deserve better in their next leader and Texans deserve another conservative Senator."
Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas hasn't said whether he would support Cornyn, if he makes a bid.
