Governor Greg Abbott and Attorney General Ken Paxton are backing opposing candidates for House District 17 in next month's GOP primary. Abbott supports the campaign of incumbent Representative Stan Gerdes of Smithville, who is running for a second term. Paxton is backing Gerdes's challenger Tom Glass, who lives in Lee County. Abbott is backing Gerdes to thank him for his support for the governor's school choice bill. Paxton is opposing Gerdes because he voted to impeach the attorney general on charges including bribery and abuse of office.
