Dylan Disu registered a game-high 19 points, but No. 21/19 BYU (15-5, 3-4 Big 12) earned an 84-72 win over Texas (14-6, 3-4 Big 12) on Saturday afternoon at the Marriott Center. The Longhorns, who played their third consecutive game against an AP Top 25 opponent, allowed opponent team season highs in field goal percentage (.640) and field goals made (32-50).
Disu converted 8-of-16 field goals (1-of-2 threes) and added a team-high seven rebounds, two assists, one block and one steal in 27 minutes. Sophomore guard Chendall Weaver posted a season-high 15 points (5-9 FG, 1-1 threes, 4-4 FT), five rebounds and two steals in 25 minutes. Junior guard Tyrese Hunter tallied 10 points (4-7 FG, 2-4 threes) and six assists in 37 minutes and surpassed the 1,000-point mark in his collegiate career with a three-pointer at the 12:19 mark of the first half.
Graduate guard Max Abmas recorded 12 points and moved into a tie for the No. 14 spot (with Alfredrick Hughes of Loyola Chicago) on the NCAA all-time Division I career scoring list with 2,914 points in 143 games.
The Longhorns scored the opening five points of the contest and jumped out to a 13-6 advantage following an Ithiel Horton three-pointer at the 15:40 mark. A Hunter three-pointer gave Texas a 19-14 cushion with 12:19 left, but BYU answered with a 12-2 spurt over the next two-plus minutes to grab a 26-21 lead following a Richie Saunders dunk at the 9:57 mark.
The Longhorns trimmed the margin to 30-29 after a Hunter jumper with 5:38 remaining, but the Cougars used an 11-2 run over the next two-and-a-half minutes to build a 41-31 cushion following a Jaxson Robinson layup at the 2:52 mark. Texas responded with a 10-1 spurt to close to within 42-41 after an Abmas jumper with 20 seconds left, before a Spencer Johnson layup at the buzzer gave the Cougars a 44-41 lead at the break.
An Abmas layup cut the gap to 44-43 at the 19:49 mark, but BYU went on a 10-0 run to build a 54-43 cushion following a Johnson layup with 17:09 remaining. Texas trimmed the margin to 63-55 after a Brock Cunningham three-pointer at the 11:14 mark, before the Cougars used a 9-0 spurt to increase their advantage to 72-55 following a Saunders three-pointer with 8:31 left. The Longhorns closed to within 76-67 after a Disu layup at the 4:24 mark, but that was as close as Texas would get the rest of the way.
Texas is back in action when it hosts No. 4/4 Houston on Monday. Tip is scheduled for 8 p.m. at Moody Center.
