WOAI celebrates Charlie Parker Day

News Radio 1200 WOAI commemorated "Charlie Parker Day" on January 18th, marking his 31st anniversary on-air at the 50,000-watt Blowtorch.

Charlie initially joined the team upon being hired by then WOAI sports director Jay Howard, primarily focusing on sports coverage. He hosted pre-game, post-game, and halftime programs for Spurs games, along with anchoring several sports talk shows. These included a weekly program featuring Dallas Cowboys coaches and another with Houston Oilers coaches.

In 1995, Charlie expanded his broadcasting horizons beyond WOAI by helping to launch Ticket 760, becoming the first San Antonio host on a local sports talk station. In 2000, he teamed up with yours truly for an afternoon talk show titled “PM San Antonio with Chris and Charlie.” This show achieved unprecedented success while covering the 2000 Bush v Gore election dispute, 9/11 and the aftermath of 9/11, recording the highest ratings ever for any program on WOAI.

By 2003, Charlie had found his permanent niche as a host on San Antonio’s First News. Now, more than three decades later, he continues to captivate audiences across 38 states, parts of Mexico and Canada, and globally via the iHeart Radio App.

Charlie's distinct approach, blending common-sense observations with robust opinions, has kept him at the forefront of radio broadcasting in San Antonio and made him a favorite among countless listeners. Additionally, he has generously contributed thousands of hours to support local charities.
