One of the strongest supporters of school vouchers in Texas is the Catholic Church. The proposal is Governor Greg Abbott's top legislative priority, and would allow parents to use taxpayer money for to pay for private education. Texas Catholic leaders support the plan, while other religious leaders oppose it. Critics say Catholic schools have seen declining enrollment for decades and could benefit from a program that may harm public schools. There are 254 Catholic schools in Texas.
