Austin is the best U.S. city for starting a career according to a new report from Bankrate. The report claims Austin is the ideal landing spot for the new graduating class. The report also showed that Gen Z has different values they're looking for in their job search, including flexible work and an employer with values they align with.

Three other metro areas in Texas appeared in the top 50, including Dallas–Fort Worth, Houston and San Antonio. Midland, Texas had the highest year-over-year job market growth of all cities analyzed. Dallas was ranked 7th, Houston was ranked 34th and San Antonio was ranked 36th.

Following Austin in the Top 5 were Seattle, Washington, Salt Lake City, Utah, Raleigh, North Carolina and Nashville, Tennessee.

The report did point out one drawback of living in Austin is the cost of living. Surging housing prices have made the cost of living in Austin significantly higher than many other places where you can start your career. The median home price in Austin was $574,000 in May 2023, according to data from Redfin — that’s about $178K higher than the nationwide median.
