A bill prohibiting Texas colleges and universities from maintaining diversity, equity and inclusion offices has the initial approval of the Texas House. State reps passed the bill with a vote of 83-60. Senate Bill 17 would also ban higher education institutions in Texas from requiring D-E-I training and D-E-I statements. The bill defines a D-E-I office as one whose policies, procedures, trainings, programs or activities provide different treatment to people based on race, sex, color, or ethnicity.
