A bill passed by the Texas Senate that would prohibit tenure at colleges and universities may have a tougher time making it through the House. Senate Bill 18 passed 18-11 on Thursday, mostly along party lines, though one Democrat voted with Republicans, claiming tenure is racist. The bill would ban tenure only for newly hired professors, and would grandfather profs who are already tenured. Opponents say the bill would make it harder for Texas schools to draw top talent. The House has no equivalent bill in the works.
