Bipartisan Bills Seek To Boost Enforcement Of State Background Check Law

Texas legislators are considering bills that will make it harder for people with a history of serious mental illness to legally acquire guns. A 2009 law requires county and district clerks statewide to send info about court-ordered mental health hospitalizations to the Department of Public Safety. The state police then send the records to the FBI's background check system, which is used by federally licensed gun dealers. After last year's school shooting in Uvalde, it came to light that local court clerks weren't sharing that information concerning juveniles. Bills to close that gap are gathering bipartisan support.
