Lawyers representing the victims of the February 2021 winter storm are hurrying to file lawsuits before the two-year statute of limitations runs out. Thousands of plaintiffs accuse power companies, distribution companies, and electric grid operators of failing to prepare for the storm. Rolling blackouts kept the grid from crashing, but caused billions in property damage, hundreds of deaths, and untold numbers of injuries. After the storm, legislators required power generators and natural gas producers to winterize their infrastructure.
