As of this afternoon, more than 200,000 Texans are without power due to the winter storm. According to PowerOutage.US, about half of those without electricity are in the Austin area, while tens-of-thousands more have lost power in East Texas.

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas says the state grid is generating enough power to meet demand and the outages are local.

The mayor of Austin, Texas, is apologizing for a lack of communication about winter storm power outages, which have left much of Austin in the dark.

"Providing clear and accurate and timely communication to the public is essential in an emergency like this and once again the city hasn't delivered," said Austin Mayor Kirk Watson.

Watson vowed to make changes, but said that time will come when the power is back on. "Over and over again we see the same failure. So something will change," said Watson. "Communication will be clear, frank and will happen in real time using any and all available techniques going forward."
