Governor Greg Abbott says he plans to seek a mandatory minimum sentence of five-years in prison for human smuggling in Texas. The governor made the announcement on Sunday after a news report that the Starr County district attorney fired his crime victims coordinator after she was arrested for her suspected involvement in a smuggling scheme. State law currently says the minimum sentence for human smuggling is two-years, but not more than ten.
